VEP (VISUAL EVOKED POTENTIALS)

The part of the visual pathways from the retina to the visual center in the brain (occipital cortex) is examined through visual stimuli and the visual pathways are evaluated. This examination is especially helpful in evaluating disorders in the region called the anterior visual pathways, namely the optic chiasm. It provides valuable information about how much the patient sees.

How is the Vep Test Applied?

In the Pattern VEP test (PVEP), the patient focuses on the red dot in the middle of a checkerboard pattern on a screen approximately 1 meter in front of him. During this time, black squares begin to turn white and white squares to turn black at regular intervals. The responses that occur in the person’s visual center during this change are recorded with the help of electrodes placed on the back of the head.

A significant difference between the latency and amplitude values of the responses obtained with both eyes or the values obtained differing from the reference values obtained in normal individuals indicates that there is a pathology in the visual pathways.

In Which Cases is the VEP Test Requested?

  • Optic Neuritis
  • Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (Circulatory disorder of the optic nerve)
  • Optical nerve damage
  • Demyelinating
  • Multiple Sclerosis
